a bit of History
In March, 2010, Sonia Balazovjech and her all-women dance team called Divinity presented a full-length show about the powers and struggles of physical abuse. The stories in it were inspired by talks with the director and residents of the West Island Woman’s Shelter. The production, “The Power of Lipstick,” became a fund-raiser for the shelter.
Though it was not their original intention, so touched were the members of the dance team by the process that in the summer of 2010, they formed their own Company with the soul purpose of giving back.
The Sonia Balazovjech Dance Company’s mission statement is “...to use dance as an educational tool to raise awareness and funds for organizations that render invaluable services to our community.”
A non-profit organization, SBDC currently funds itself by welcoming the public to partake in drop-in dance classes, which covers studio rental space and incidentals.
SBDC's first official full-length show, which benefited 60 Million Girls Foundation, was first performed in November, 2011. Click on the ENSEMBLE logo at the left for more information.
